at candidate night

by Richard Oldrieve

Cleveland-On Sunday October 13, Stonewall Cleveland, the Log Cabin Republicans, and Buck Harris's The Gay '90s radios show are co-sponsoring a Candidates' Night.

We have already received commitments from several prominent Democratic and Republican politicians. On the Republican side, Rep. Martin Hoke and County Commissioner Lee Weingart are coming to explain why voters should retain them in their current seats. On the Democratic side, State Senator Dennis Kucinich and Brook Park Mayor Thomas

Please come from 6:30 to 9:30 pm, at the Pilgrim United Church of Christ, at West 14th Street and Starkweather Ave. in Tremont, and two years from now all of the candidates will add our forum to their calendar of must events.

We also suggest that you keep an open mind about unendorsed candidates at this point and see what support they will offer the lesbianbi-gay community at Candidates' Night.

For those of you who can't make it in person, The Gay '90s will be broadcasting the event from 7 to 9 pm on WERE 1300 AM. Nevertheless, because a large live audience gives a better impression that the lesbian-bigay community will go out of our way if the candidates will, we strongly urge members of the community to attend the forum in person.

Just remember that the main reason we have succeeded in garnering commitments from an even more impressive and ideologi-

In the end though, answers on surveys and candidates forums go only so far in helping achieve civil rights protections. We appreciate even more the actions of elected officials like Rep. Louis Stokes, who supported the Employment NonDiscrimination Act and voted against the Defense of Marriage Act, and North Olmsted Mayor Ed Boyle, who led the City Council there to pass a fair housing ordinance that includes lesbian and gay protections.

Candidate's Night will be held at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 2592 West 14th Street, in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood. Please call Bill Henderson at 216-6219530; John Farina at 216-521-2684; or Rich Oldrieve at 216-892-1994 for further information.

Coming Out Day 'Speak

Out' to be held in Canton

Canton-Stonewall Akron, a not-forprofit organization dedicated to promoting equal rights for lesbians, gay men and bisexuals is the area's primary organizer of the National Coming Out Day project and events.

National Coming Out Day, October 11, is organized nationally by Human Rights Campaign's Coming Out project and is celebrated and commemorated in nearly every population center throughout the country.

The goal of the National Coming Out Day project is to increase the visibility of the lesbian, gay, and bisexual community. Establishing a positive dialogue with nongay people about the diversity of the gay community helps to turn ignorance into acceptance.

To be treated as equals, gays, lesbians, and bisexuals must have the support of

non-gays. This requires being truthful about their sexual orientation to show that the community crosses all ethnic, racial, geographic, and economic barriers. Gays, lesbians, and bisexuals are everywhere.

National Coming Out Day is celebrated on October 11 every year to commemorate the second March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights in 1987. Following that event, gay and lesbian leaders decided that coming-out-public affirmation of one's sexual orientation-was a basic tool to effect change and dispel negative stereotypes about gay people. It was decided that October 11 would be the day to focus attention on coming out, raising the visibility of gay and lesbian people in their communities and in the media.

The 1996 National Coming Out Day project spokespeople are Candace Gingrich, sister of House Speaker Newt Gingrich; and Dan Butler, who plays Bob "Bulldog" Briscoe on NBC's Frasier.

Stonewall Akron will hold a "Speak Out” public affriation of diversity of sexual orientation on Friday, October 11, 1996 at the park next to the Stark County Court-

own? house at 12:00 noon. This marks the first

venue.

The public is welcome to participate in the event by listening to presenters and/or by being a presenter.

Stonewall Akron will be joined by Akron Area NOW, the Kent State Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Union, and the University of Akron Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Union in providing the speakers and the program. The program is expected to last 40 minutes. Public and media are encouraged to attend.
